The Berkshires Art Tour: More Than Just Trees

When people think of the Berkshires, they usually think of hiking, quiet mountains, or looking at the leaves in the fall. But if you really want to see what makes this part of Western Massachusetts a global destination, you have to look at the art. This region is home to some of the most impressive museums in the country, and you don’t have to be an “art expert” to be blown away by what’s on display here.

The heavy hitter is Mass MoCA in North Adams. This isn’t your typical quiet museum; it’s a massive 16ndustrial factory complex that has been turned into a powerhouse for contemporary art. Because the buildings are so huge, they can host massive light shows and statues that wouldn’t fit anywhere else in the world. For May 2026, it’s a great place to spend hours just walking through different “worlds” of design. It feels more like an adventure than a museum trip.

After the scale of Mass MoCA, you should head over to The Clark Art Institute in Williamstown. For 2026, they have some incredible new installations, including a year-long project by Sónia Almeida called Stages that uses patterns and textures in a way that’s actually fun to look at. They also just opened a major look at the Aso O. Tavitian Collection, which features masterpieces from all over Europe. The best part? The museum is surrounded by 140 acres of beautiful fields. You can walk the trails, see the outdoor art, and get that “Quiet Luxury” feeling without the big-city price tag.
