Being Black and Self-Employed at 28 in Massachusetts: My Real Talk on Building Alone and Staying Grounded

Living in Massachusetts at 28, Black, self-employed, and without family around has been a real mix of challenges, growth, and learning. I moved here with my ex and after things didn’t work out I figured things out on my own, built a media company from scratch, and while it’s been cool, it hasn’t always been easy.

One thing I can’t ignore is how much people stare. Sometimes it feels like they’re trying to figure me out — like I’m lost or don’t belong. There’s this vibe of judgment, or maybe even that “superior” look, that’s hard to shake. It makes you aware that being Black in spaces where you’re often the only one carries a weight — a constant reminder you have to prove yourself just to be seen as equal.

Living alone has meant I’ve had to rely on myself in ways I never expected. No family nearby, no safety net. Just me and my hustle. I poured everything into building my media company because it’s not just a business — it’s my proof that I can do this, that I can create something from nothing.

As things started looking up, I noticed people trying to get closer. But I’m careful now. I’ve learned to keep my walls up because not everyone who wants to be around you has your best interests at heart. Some want to benefit from your success, to climb higher on your back, especially when you’re someone rising in a community that hasn’t always had the same opportunities.

It’s tough, balancing ambition with trust, and navigating spaces that don’t always feel welcoming. But this journey has taught me so much about resilience, self-worth, and protecting my energy. I celebrate every win, big or small, because I know the hard work and the silent battles behind them.

At the end of the day, being Black and self-employed here isn’t just about the grind. It’s about owning your story, staying true to yourself, and building on your own terms — even when it feels like the world is watching.
