BOSTON — A box truck crashed into a building and overturned onto a sidewalk in Boston’s Chinatown neighborhood on Tuesday afternoon, injuring six people, including the driver. The incident occurred around 12:45 p.m. near the intersection of Kneeland Street and Harrison Avenue.

According to Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox, the yellow Penske rental truck veered off the road, struck utility poles, and became wedged between a pole and the Great Wall Kitchen Supply store. Four individuals were transported to local hospitals, with two suffering serious injuries; the remaining two were treated at the scene.

Witnesses reported that the truck appeared to be out of control before the crash. Chris Sullivan, who was nearby at the time, described hearing loud crashing noises and then seeing people lying on the ground.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident, including the possibility of a medical emergency involving the driver. Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden stated that, at this preliminary stage, there is no indication that the act was intentional.

The Boston Fire Department responded promptly, extracting the trapped driver from the cab of the overturned truck. Mayor Michelle Wu noted the significance of the location, emphasizing the potential for more severe consequences given the area’s high pedestrian traffic during lunchtime.

Penske, the company that rented out the truck, has expressed its cooperation with authorities in the ongoing investigation.

The intersection remained closed for several hours as crews worked to clear the scene and assess the structural integrity of the affected building. Officials urge anyone with information about the incident to contact Boston police.
