1. Could you provide a brief introduction about yourself?

My name is Calique Jones, I go by Leak because it’s easier. I am a 27 year old HS basketball coach. Originally from Pittsburgh, Pa. I love basketball and everything regarding the sport. I am an artist as well. Ranging from sketches to paintings to tattooing.

2. What served as your inspiration to embark on a coaching journey?

After I graduated college I tried going overseas to play basketball (still in the process). I discussed my path with a couple of coaches and my mother. Eventually, I understood my knowledge of the game was pretty high. From there I wanted to give my knowledge that I learned from Middle School, High School, and College ball to the kids that are pursuing that as their dream. I never really thought coaching would’ve came so soon but taking the steps made me love it more and more. I feel these kids would love to understand and learn from a kid that graduated 5 years ago with experience.

3. Could you share some achieved goals and your aspirations for the future?

My first year coaching I wanted to be above .500. Win more games than we lose. My team was small but we still fought and clawed our way to wins. I also wanted to win at least 3 championships. We fell short multiple times in the championship game. That eventually turned into learning experiences. We got back in the gym and went after it to chase a championship. I finished my AAU season above .500 which was the first goal checked. Now for my next year, the plan is to win most of the tournaments we get to play in. I would love to win all. Speaking realistically, most is a better answer.

4. Do you have any daily guiding principles or words of wisdom?

I live by many quotes but my favorite is by Kobe Bryant discussing coaching. He stated: “The beauty of coaching is growing the players from the ground up. That journey continues.” When you think about it, I want players to be the best version of themselves. That’s my goal to make them the best male/female they can grow up to be. Basketball teaches a lot, patience, being coachable, & discipline.

5. Beyond coaching, how do you envision making a positive impact?

I am role model. Coaching is my outlet to showcase my ability to be a big brother and a helpful leader to the next generation. Being able to be around for them when they need help throughout life.

Having a foundation focusing on families that are struggling is another envision i’m working to achieve in my community and all over. I just want to be helpful in anyway possible for my people.

6. Is there anything else you’d like to tell others about yourself?

I was a kid that didn’t have the skill to be D1. I wasn’t handsomely tall. I wasn’t picked to be a top tier player. But, I worked 10x harder than anyone to make it where I am today. My consistency helped me grow into the man I am today. I had a good HS career. In college I had a great career. People can change, but if you quit you’ll never see the success you envisioned. I didn’t score 1,000 points in HS but college I scored 1,500+. It’s a matter of being a gymrat, and staying true to yourself.

Peace, Love, and Positivity to you all.
