1. Can you provide some information about yourself and describe who you are?

  • Hello there! I’m Kim, a 22-year-old artist born and raised in Davao City, Philippines. Currently, I’m pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a major in painting, and I’m excited to say that I’m in my final year. Ever since I was a child, I’ve had a passion for art, which was evident when my mother gave me paper and crayons at the age of 5. I feel grateful that I’ve been able to follow this artistic journey throughout my life.

2. What sparked your passion for art and drawing?

  • My mother, who is a teacher, played a significant role in igniting my passion for art and drawing. At a young age, I found myself drawing everything I saw on TV. I vividly remember a time when I used my mother’s book as a canvas, drawing random things on its pages. While she was initially upset, she understood my love for art. From elementary to high school, I gained recognition as the “best artist” among my peers, which was both overwhelming and uncomfortable for me as an introvert. Nevertheless, I appreciated their compliments and support. Growing up watching DC and Marvel shows, character design became my primary focus. Currently, I’m working on my thesis artwork featuring my own characters. Digital drawings serve as a stress reliever, while traditional mediums like colored pencils and pens are also enjoyable for me. Portraiture is another skill I’ve developed, and I even earn money through commissions. As I near the completion of my studies, I eagerly anticipate the next chapter of my artistic journey.

3. What advice would you give to individuals aspiring to pursue a career in the field of art?

  • To all the budding artists and art enthusiasts, my advice is to keep practicing. Appreciate every step of progress and every outcome of your artistic endeavors. If art truly captures your passion, then pursue it wholeheartedly. In my country, many parents view art solely as a “hobby” for their children, failing to recognize its true beauty and significance in our industry. Don’t let anyone deter you from pursuing what you love. Continually work on honing your skills, discover your own art style, delve into art history, and live freely. Ultimately, you hold the reins to your own life.

4. What goals do you hope to achieve in the next 1-3 years?

  • My ultimate dream since childhood has been to become a comic book artist or an illustrator, particularly for Marvel or DC. Someday, I believe I will achieve this dream. After graduating from college, my plan is to find a job that aligns with my passion for the arts. It’s truly rewarding to work in a field you love, as opposed to settling for a job you dislike. Once I’ve saved enough money, I aspire to establish my own business.

5. What challenges or obstacles did you encounter on your journey to develop your artistic skills and reach your current level?

  • Discrimination has been one of the major challenges I faced. Negative comments from others, particularly when comparing my skills to those of professionals, used to affect me. However, I’ve learned to protect myself emotionally and utilize such criticism as motivation to keep improving.

6. Is there anything else you’d like to share about yourself with others?

  • Adversity has made me stronger, teaching me to safeguard my emotions and feelings. I believe it’s crucial for everyone to learn this, as it profoundly impacts personal growth and progress in life.
